Fashion Faux Pas: 7 Style Mistakes My Clients Banished for Good in 2023

When it comes to style, I truly believe in the motto “to each her own.”

As a stylist, I’m not here to try to change anyone. I’m here to help you express your individuality through effortless style, so you can show up confidently every time you get dressed.

There are so many false stories in the media that can make a woman feel downright bad about herself. That’s not what Elevated Style is about! I started this company to help the everyday professional woman show up as her best self, and define that however she sees fit - with a little guidance from yours truly.

The truth is, the definition of ‘best self’ can look different for all of us. There’s no cookie-cutter method to selecting the colors, silhouettes, and designs that will bring out the best in you, which is why styling should always be treated with an individual approach.

With that said, there are a few mistakes I see over and over again that prevent us from becoming our best and most stylish selves.

No matter your personal style, aesthetic, size, or age, I notice a lot of women being held back by these 7 key challenges.

At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong when it comes to style. But there are things that can definitely contribute to an outfit looking more flattering, or going in the opposite direction.

Let’s dive in so that you can go from faux pas to fabulous!

7 Fashion Faux Pas To Avoid In Your Everyday Outfits

1. Leaving Your Tops Untucked

Long tunics, oversize button-downs, and flowy blouses can look great, but not if they are drowning you. Tucking is an easy solution that accentuates AND creates shape. A simple front tuck can easily take your outfit from frumpy to chic, and it doesn’t have to be complicated.

If you feel like a full tuck is too much, try an effortlessly cool French tuck. Otherwise known as a half-tuck, this styling trick will define the waistline while still feeling relaxed.

2. Wearing All Black, All The Time

As a New Yorker, I would never dismiss an all-black outfit at any time of year. However, I find many women purchase mostly black by default. I get it - black is easy, chic, and slimming. But adding some color to your life can make your outfits pop. Not to mention, everyone has a shade or two that will really flatter them.

If you’re not sure where to begin, you can always start small by wearing small pops of color through accessories. Once you start feeling more comfortable with color, you can transition to adding colorful staple pieces and/or monochromatic looks.

3. Sticking To Outdated Shoes

Style Mistakes To Avoid Wearing Outdated Shoes

Kate Spade’s Palm Springs slide sandals are fresh & modern!

When you love a pair of shoes, it shows. We wear them on repeat, which often ends in a little too much wear and tear. Most of us tend to keep what we love longer than we probably should. Especially if you’ve spent a certain amount of money on them, or if they have sentimental value.

If you’ve had your shoes for a few years and have never been to a cobbler to treat and fix the leather or resole your heel, you might want to consider giving them a refresh. However, even a cobbler can’t fix outdated styles. The toe shape of your shoe and its heel or sole can make or break your outfit, so make sure yours feels right. This year, it’s all about a rounded toe shape and sleek heels

4.  Holding Onto Outdated Layers

Over the past few years, especially since Covid, I’ve seen a lot of dusty interview suits and blazers. Some of my clients have held onto old suits for over 15 years. But if you don’t want to look 15 older than you are … it’s time to let go of your outdated pieces.

Focus on updating your go-to jackets, blazers, and cardigans to fresher styles. After all, these are the pieces that you’re going to wear on a near-daily basis, especially in the office. They’re also pieces that we tend to buy less of, compared to t-shirts and blouses, which is why it’s always good to update your style game so you can have a bit of variety.

5. The Only Jeans You Own Are Skinny Jeans

Why limit yourself to skinnies when you can also have fabulous flares, like these ones from Good American?

Jeans are one of my most talked about items, whether it’s with a 1-on-1 client or within any of my workshops. They’re part of what I call the “style trifecta”. Getting all three of them right (bras, jeans, and bathing suits) can really boost your confidence! Trust me, I’ve seen it. There’s a lot that goes into finding the perfect jeans; it’s a topic that deserves its own blog.

But the one thing that I will say is this … one style of jeans probably won’t be enough. Skinny jeans are great for balancing oversize or flowy tops with amazing boots. However, there are other jean styles that can do so much more while being more flattering for different body types. Consider investing in straight, cropped kick flare, or full-length wide-leg jeans to diversify your denim wardrobe and breathe new life into your jeans.

6. Wearing The Wrong Bra

If you haven’t been fitted for a bra in over a decade, I suggest you google your local bra fitting store and go ASAP. It’s especially necessary if you’ve lost or gained any weight recently.

An ill-fitting bra can break a look by creating an unflattering silhouette with curves in all the wrong places. A well-fitting one will enhance your natural figure and provide the perfect foundation for any outfit, boosting your confidence and comfort throughout the day. So start with what’s underneath first. If you're in NYC, one of my most recommended go-to’s is The Town Shop.

7. Not Bothering With Accessories

Missoma proves that layered necklaces can make even a basic tank look interesting

Sometimes, people spend so much time and energy picking out their clothing and their shoes that they have no energy left to figure out the jewelry. Even the understated kind makes a big difference, bringing a subtle finishing touch of chic style to any outfit.

Jewelry is also one of the easiest ways to make clothes feel new. Even a plain black or white t-shirt will feel more glamorous with the addition of a few layered necklaces. So the next time you put together an outfit, take a moment to add an accessory or two. It’s a small detail that will leave a lasting impact. If you’re looking for affordable everyday gold jewelry, check out Missoma, like their Lucy Williams Square Onyx Necklace, which is perfect for layering.
