NYC Stylist-Approved Fall 2023 Trends (For Every Woman at Any Age)

Fashion doesn’t fade; it evolves.

And for us women embracing style in our 30s through to our 50s, it's essential to find that sweet spot between timeless style and current flair. As an NYC personal stylist to many different types of women in all kinds of industries, I need to have my finger on the pulse of the latest trends.  My goal is to ensure that you stay chic and relevant without the fuss of wading through every fleeting trend.

Like me, you probably adore sneaking a peek at Fashion Week looks just for the fun of it, indulging in Instagram style inspo, or crafting your dream outfit boards on Pinterest. Or, maybe, you wish you had the time to even give any of these 2 minutes of thought. Yet because you’re too busy to figure it all out, you may stay stuck over-wearing the same items on repeat. So when rubber meets the road – or should I say, when the heel meets the pavement – the truth is, trends should serve us, not define us. Because, let’s face it, unless you're walking a red carpet daily, your outfits need to work in the real world … not just in Reels.

So, how do you strike that perfect balance? Begin with a well-curated closet of staple pieces you adore. Layer in a few fresh seasonal updates, and voilà! A wardrobe that’s both versatile, wearable, and on point.

Ready to get more current with your work-to-weekend style? Here are five chic updates for your Fall 2023 wardrobe:

The Top 5 Stylist-Approved Trends For Fall 2023

1. Back to Basics with Dark Denim

With summer waving goodbye to us, it's time for a denim glow-up. This season isn’t just about your trusted jeans. Think midi skirts, tailored jackets, vests, and yes, even denim purses. Key styles to watch? Barrel jeans, patch pocket 70’s style denim, wide legs, and cargo vibes. But, a gentle heads-up: the era of skinny jeans dominance seems to be taking a pause. I know you may not want to hear that. If your closet is like most of my clients’, you may still own about 10 of them. So maybe, just maybe, consider diversifying your denim game.

2. The Era of Effortless Flats

Remember the days of teetering in towering heels at the office? Well, comfort is reigning supreme in our post-Covid world. But these aren’t your early 2000's flats. Today's pairs boast bold colors, edgy toe shapes, and a touch of retro charm with loafers and Mary Janes making a chic return. Picture this: chunky loafers, streamlined pants, and an oversized button-down crowned with a statement piece – the quintessential work-to-weekend ensemble. There are a few key updates you’ll need to keep in mind to avoid looking frumpy and dated:

  • Opt for color pop or metallic flats instead of your typical neutrals. If that’s not your style, there’s nothing wrong with black! It typically is the most flattering color, especially when worn with pants or jeans.

  • Look for alternative toe shapes. Most of us automatically think of rounded flats, like the iconic Chanel flat, but pointed or square-toed flats have an edgier yet polished feel (if that's your vibe).

  • Loafers and Mary Janes are also having a strong comeback. Be mindful of complementing and balancing feminine/masculine elements in the same look for that cool NY feel.

3. Striped Oversize Button Downs

This is a personal favorite, and I predict they'll be a big part of your fall uniform. Let this breezy piece steal the show. Pair it with a wool coat or a snazzy blazer, throw in your dark denim, and complete the look with a cool & comfy pair of boots. Simple, sophisticated, and oh-so-chic!

4. Radiate in Red

Move over, summer Barbie pinks! The depth of fall calls for the intensity of reds and burgundies. Whether it's an audacious dress or subtle accessories, let the power of red amplify your look. Red has always been associated with power, confidence, and passion. This is why throwing on a red lip can do wonders, even if you’re feeling crappy. Try it, you’ll be surprised! Red definitely makes a statement, so if you’re not ready to go all out … no worries. A splash of red in a belt, bag, fiery red shoes, or even a statement necklace keeps you in the style loop.

5. Accessorize to Mesmerize

Refreshing your wardrobe might be as simple as updating your baubles. Elevate heirloom pieces by layering them with contemporary ones. Layer necklaces, rings, bracelets, or even ear candy.  I’m LOVING these lab-grown diamond ear cuffs by Seed 2 Stone. They are a simple yet stylish game-changer. Timeless brilliance at a fraction of the price (and a discount with ELEVATEDALIYA10)!

Elevated Style’s philosophy is that great style doesn’t need to be complicated. You just need a vision and a plan. Learning how to incorporate trends with staple pieces, and learning how to confidently dress for your body type now (not your body from 10 years ago) are key.

Sometimes, we just need a little help figuring it all out. If you need more advice on dressing for your body type and making your wardrobe a little more up-to-date without all the fuss, give me a shout!  The Elevated Style Signature E.D.I.T is designed to transform wardrobes.
