5 Tips To Instantly Make You Feel More Style Confident

We have all been there. You choose an outfit, look in the mirror and hate it.  You choose a “better” outfit, look in the mirror, it’s still not right!  What’s even more frustrating, you don’t know exactly why.   You feel like you have nothing to wear all the time, even if you just bought new clothes.  It’s an annoying cycle that can rattle anyone’s confidence.

Some may say focusing on outside appearance and image is superficial.  Nonsense.  Being confident and feeling good about yourself inside and out is meant to be celebrated, and explored, however YOU see fit.  Elevating your style is simply one way to do just that.  It can help us immensely both personally and professionally.

Feeling style confident when you walk out the door daily, no matter your gender, age, or size, can be challenging.  I get it!  Even as a personal stylist I have my days. Help is here.  It doesn’t need to be overcomplicated.  Like anything that’s worth it, it takes time and a plan.  Below are 5 tips you can use immediately to help you become more style confident.

1. Be you, define your signature style.

You might ask, what does that even mean?  Signature style is basically that “thing” you typically (and sometimes unknowingly) implement that is uniquely you. It’s your staple, how your personality speaks.  You rarely see me walk out of the house without a red lip.  I wear it on date night, or taking my kids to the playground.  It’s just me, playful and bold.  I also love a printed headscarf, and bold jewelry, they speak to me.  That’s my signature style.  Maybe yours is a blazer that you dress up or down, bold colors, a minimalist look, sporty chic, or flirty dresses.  Whatever it is, make it you, your self expression.  To keep it exciting and fresh, each season think about investing in variations of your signature style.  In the end, you must feel good wearing it.  If it feel like “you” the confidence naturally follows.

2. Preparation

Sometimes we find ourselves in a downward spiral taking forever to choose an outfit in the morning because we didn’t prepare.  The solution … pick out outfits the night before, like back in high school.  As irritating as it may seem to do this, when all you want to do is relax and not think about the next day, simply put on some music and take 5-10 minutes to prep for the morning.  It will save you time and stress.  I even suggest to clients, you can also prep for a few days or the week! Pre-select for the work week on Sunday and you’re done.  When you know your signature style and have staple essentials, this task becomes easy.

3. Love it, or leave it!

Forget the amazing discounted sale price of those lavendar butter leather pants.  This is why we don’t wear 50% of the things that we already own. We’ve been duped by marketing and trends to keep buying more!  Only buy it if you have a need AND love it.  The more items we 100% love to put on, the more functional and wearable our wardrobe becomes.  That’s the true wardrobe goal.  In turn, the less money you waste.  When you have more choices of things you love, you’re excited to get dressed everyday, and style confidence soars.  Same goes for your closet … if you don’t LOVE it, get rid of it!  Purge, purge, purge.  Change is good.

4. Don’t overlook comfort

You know when you see “those” women walking down the street beaming with confidence, with seemingly effortless amazing style?!  I can assure you, she’s comfortable in what she’s wearing.  Her pants aren’t cutting into her waist, the fabric is just right, and the fit is flawless.   When you’re uncomfortable in your clothes, it shows.  It affects how we present ourselves.  Comfort doesn’t have to mean boring and dated.  Being comfortable, yet still fabulous, is just smart.

5. Use a local tailor

FIT is everything.  EVERYTHING.  This is probably hands-down the most important tip.  Many are wearing ill fitting clothing, not dressing for their body shape.  Clothes are too big and too small.  We don’t need to be a slave to size, struggling to fit unattainable “one size fits all” molds.  Therefore, if necessary, buy larger and get it tailored to fit you perfectly.  Half my job as a personal stylist is educating about fit.   Disregard the size.  Size means nothing … and again, fit means EVERYTHING.
